The waste industry continues to show a return to normalcy after a turbulent period of pandemic and economic challenges. Some of the top trends we saw in 2023 centered around climate risks, fleet developments, plastics debates, environmental justice action, and of course more M&A. 2023 saw notable M&A activity, with an estimated $2.99B spent by the industry’s top five publicly traded companies through Q3, with over 100 total transaction involving U.S. solid waste companies. We also saw the total number of workers employed in “waste management and remediation services” increase by 16,000 to right at around 500,000 workers, compared to November 2022. We have also seen a boom in waste reduction projects, organics, and zero waste initiatives, with a large number receiving sizable EPA grants. In addition to ongoing commitments from the EPA to building out organic waste recycling infrastructure.
